19th century Japanese handstitched tapestry
This was a gift from a Pilgrim Place resident that hung over the fireplace in the dining hall. It’s handstitched with silk threads dyed with vegetable dyes and made from silk harvested from silkworms and spun by the women who made it. Over the years the colors have faded so it’s in the process of being restored, and meanwhile waiting in the museum.
Pilgrim Place has a wonderful museum of art from around the world. It was closed when we went by but one of the curators let us in anyway.
Timo and I went to visit his mom Joan at her home in the Pilgrim Place community, a retirement center for people who were in religious and nonprofit careers (and continue to remain active in a variety of ways). There are a variety of living situations from small houses for couples, to apartments (where Joan lives), to assisted living, and everyone seems to be working on many projects at any given time. To give you a clue of the vibe, the first thing we saw when we rolled up was the U.N. flag hanging under the American flag. During the community announcements time at lunch people got up to announce a lecture on a two-state solution by a doctor from Israel, an invitation to the open Women’s Perspective Forum (men encouraged to join!), a moment of silence for the National Day of Peace, Amnesty International letter-writing, and a request for help pricing knitting supplies. We enjoyed a tour of the grounds including seeing lovely houses and gardens (Joan and I both appreciate southern california Spanish/Mission style architecture), the onsite multicultural artifact museum, the onsite art and craft studios, the library (which Joan helps run), the greenhouse and lunch with wonderful hosts.
